June was an unbelievably gorgeous month in Alaska.
The leaves sprung to life, the days were long and warm and the sun was shining. A lot.
We also had the pleasure of entertaining my mom and enjoyed touring around the state a bit with her.
Here are some Instagram Photo Highlights from June
Biking the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
This is one of the funnest things to do in Anchorage. The 11-mile stretch gives you alternating views of the city, the coast and meanders through the forest. We even saw two moose! Not an uncommon sight along the trail but always fun to spot.
Hiking the Powerline Trail
A flat but still entertaining hike (more of a walk, really) is up Powerline Trail. We ventured up there on a warm day and loved seeing that things were finally turning green and wildflowers were starting to bloom.
Driving to Valdez, Alaska
I’d only been to Valdez once before, so I was excited to make the 6-hour drive down there again when my mom was in town.
This view from Thompson Pass is one of the best.
And Valdez’s harbor is cute with dramatic views.
Here’s a shot taken from the old Valdez town site before the 1964 earthquake destroyed it. The new town site can be seen in the distance along the shore.
We ventured out on a sightseeing cruise to check out wildlife and the Columbia Glacier, seen below.
The glacier was hard to see from this far away, unfortunately, and we couldn’t get any closer because of all the ice. But that’s totally okay because the highlight for me was seeing all of the wildlife. We saw tons of otters, puffins, sea lions, seals, eagles, porpoises and even a humpback whale. And June is also a great time for seeing so many babies. It was awesome!
Homer is a cute artists’ town tucked away at the end of the Kenai Peninsula and a visit there is always fun.
The lupine were in full bloom. Love them.
I’ll never tire of the loooong summer days up here in Alaska. On the longest day we get about 20 hours of daylight, and this shot was taken at about 11pm at night.
Here’s an overview of Homer and the 4.5-mile long spit.
Driving the Beautiful Glenn Highway
And finally, a couple of snaps from our drive along the Glenn Highway, possibly one of the most scenic in Alaska and just east of Anchorage.
So there you have it! A quick little overview of how I spent June up here in Alaska.
Hope you’re having a fabulous summer so far!
