I thought it might be helpful to post more photos of each of the 3 mountain passes we drove over in the Dolomites. We start with Sella Pass and then we’ll move on to Pordoi Pass & Gardena in the days to come.
We were staying in Castelrotto, so getting to Sella Pass was easy because it’s only about a 45-minute drive. This is what you get to look at on the way.
I know for me at least, stunning scenery can be really distracting to just make sure to keep your eyes on the road at least some of the time (ok most of the time :).
Near the summit of the pass, you’ll go by Rifugio Passo Sella, a place to stay if you want to base yourself right in the heart of it.
At the top of the pass, park your car and walk around to take in the views. For you non-metric people, 2240 meters is about 7349 feet. :)
There are a few buildings here and you can grab a bite to eat. We feasted on a couple of tasty pastries.
Mental mints, anyone?
I’ve seen some awful-looking parking lots in my day, but this one just might be the prettiest ever. Just don’t park too close to the edge. :)
Another parking lot to the south in case the other one was full.
After chowing down on our pastries, we headed down the other side of the pass. Still pretty, no?
Map
Here’s a map of our driving route around the Dolomite Mountains. Passo Sella’s on the left and we drove this loop counter clockwise. In my post about driving the 3 Mountain Passes (Sella, Pordoi & Gardena), I talked about how we did this whole loop in a day (roughly 6-7 hours of driving). We saw a lot, but it was also a ton of driving. So if you’re able to and have the time, I’d say it’s better to spread it out a bit more than we did.
Wishing you safe & happy travels!
